New Encyclopedia Centers Transgender Rights, Experiences, and Identities

The SAGE Encyclopedia of Trans Studies features over 300 entries from renowned trans activists, scholars, and allies

SAGE Publishing announces the release of The SAGE Encyclopedia of Trans Studies, a two-volume set featuring 300+ entries that examine experiences of the trans community across different subjects, cultures, and life stages.

Containing entries from over 300 contributors from the social & behavioral sciences and humanities, the encyclopedia takes an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach to examine discrimination, correct misconceptions, and increase trans awareness. Contributed articles examine key issues, including:

  • Instances of discrimination: cisgenderism, health care discrimination, and military bans

  • Key individuals: Harry Benjamin, Chaz Bono, Jazz Jennings

  • Organizations advocating for the trans community: interACT: Advocates for Intersex Youth, Lambda Legal, World Professional Association for Transgender Health

  • Major events: Stonewall Riots, Compton’s Cafeteria Riot

“We aimed to consider trans people’s experiences in diverse contexts and systems, as well as across different life stages, and transitions,” states editor Dr. Abbie E. Goldberg. “We are hopeful scholars will read and incorporate the information into their thinking, writing, and teaching and that policymakers and activists draw on the many important topics in this encyclopedia as the basis for their transformative work.”

Dr. Goldberg currently works as a Professor of Psychology and the Director of Women’s and Gender Studies at Clark University. Co-editor Dr. Genny Beemyn serves as the Director of the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Stonewall Center and the Coordinator of Campus Pride’s Trans Policy Clearinghouse.

  • Rachel Crandall-Crocker: Creator of International Day of Transgender Visibility

  • Kylar Broadus: Founder of the Trans People of Color Coalition

  • Mara Keisling: Founder & Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality

  • Dr. Marquis Bey: Author of Them Goon Rules

“Importantly, this book is for trans individuals who are seeking a resource where they are at the center of thinking, theorizing, and research, instead of at the margins,” Dr. Beemyn concludes.

In recognition of the title's release and International Day of Trans Visibility, the editors and SAGE are hosting two free events featuring the encyclopedia’s contributors. The first, Trans Rights Priorities for the Biden Administration, is on March 29th, and the second, The State of Trans Studies in the 2020s, on April 7th.
