“Still Climbing the Hill: Intersectional Reflections on Brown and Beyond” – The 18th Annual Brown Lecture in Education Research

SAGE is proud to publish the journals of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), a national research society which strives to advance knowledge about education, encourage scholarly inquiry, and promote the use of research to improve education and serve the public good.

Each year the AERA host the public Brown Lecture in Educational Research. Now in its 18th year, this year’s lecture will take place virtually on Thursday, October 21 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. ET. The lecture will be delivered by Lori Patton Davis, professor of higher education and student affairs at Ohio State University. Patton Davis is an influential scholar known for her cross-cutting scholarship on African Americans in higher education, critical race theory, diversity initiatives on college campuses, Black girls and women in educational and social contexts, and college student development.

The lecture’s central inquiry will be “Why are we still climbing the hill of educational equity 67 years after the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education” and was inspired by the National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman’s poem “The Hill We Climb.

In her lecture, Lori Patton Davis will challenge dominant narratives surrounding Brown and introduce perspectives that might help account for our lack of progress. The lecture will consider pressing questions such as: How can we better understand racial inequalities in education by examining the circumstances that intensified the Covid-19 pandemic? How might a critical race lens guide educators, policymakers, and researchers toward a more progressive realization of the promises of Brown? How might education researchers engage in activism modeled after the work of communities still fighting for the racial and educational equity envisioned in Brown?
