White papers
Our reports help us better understand the challenges and issues that we and our library partners face as well the wider research community as scholarly publishing continues to evolve.
When we talk about how to help science benefit the world outside of academia to meet societal needs, we often talk about incentive and reward structures, problems with research assessment, and skills training to support communicating with policymakers, practitioners, and the public. But sometimes we sidestep the question of whether researchers actually care about the “outside” impact of their work.
This Sage Business White Paper focuses on issues relating to existing bibliometrics and institutional reward structures at play within business schools. It has been featured in a Times Higher Education article that discusses meaningful impact in business school academics.
Following a review of over 400 research tools and software, this white paper examines the ecosystem of technologies for social science research. It addresses the challenges facing those who build and use these tools, and looks to the future of technology in social research.
The report summarizes key points from a workshop Sage convened in February 2019 with world-leading experts on research impact. Participants represented were Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Altmetric, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, Clarivate Analytics, Google, New York University, Sage, School Dash, SciTech Strategies, the Social Science Research Council, and the University of Washington.
Reviews the benefits of e-Learning when teaching social research methods and data science skills with insights from the team who created Sage Campus.
Provides insight into, and explores, the tangible impact that video is having on student engagement and learning in higher education.
Provides insight on the social scientists currently engaging in big data research, the obstacles they face, and the hurdles discouraging newcomers to the field.
Details of how new research published as—Expecting the Unexpected: Serendipity, Discovery, and the Scholarly Research Process— led to the development of Sage Recommends, a new discovery tool launched in December 2015.
Discusses findings from a global survey of 239 students and faculty combined with user experience research and interviews with publishing experts and technology suppliers, alongside an in-depth review of relevant literature.
Reveals the types of educational videos that appeal to students and where they go to find them. This white paper includes suggestions for librarians as they connect the video resources found in their libraries with researchers, instructors, and students.
Discusses new ways for members of the scholarly communications supply chain to come together to solve discoverability issues.
Drawing on observations of industry experts in a variety of roles, this white paper summarizes the current discovery landscape for scholarly communications and advocates for cooperative efforts across the scholarly communication value chain. The paper proposes specific recommendations for discoverability improvement related to standards, transparency, metadata, and partnerships.
Finds that though the definition of reference is changing, this is in part because reference resources now look and feel like other information sources and because other information resources perform the traditional purpose of reference—answering research questions.
Results of the roundtable held by Sage in association with Jisc to discuss the role of academic librarians in implementing gold open access (OA) article-processing charges (APCs). The roundtable was chaired by Stella Butler, RLUK, and attended by a panel of 14 senior librarians and other industry experts.
A research study conducted by Sage in consultation with Claire Creaser of LISU (part of Loughborough University), and Lucy Browse of International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP), investigating library value in the developing world. The report is a follow up to the 2012 study conducted with LISU “Working together: evolving value for academic libraries”.
Sponsored by Sage, this report looks at faculty members’ practices, attitudes and needs. The results focus on research and teaching practices broadly, as well as the dissemination, collecting, discovery, and access of research and teaching materials.
