Sage CEO Blaise Simqu Interview with Drs. Alondra Nelson and Elizabeth Anderson

Nelson and Anderson are the Recipients of the 2023 Sage-CASBS Award

The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) hosted the Sage-CASBS Award Lecture on November 16th, 2023. Elizabeth Anderson of the University of Michigan and Alondra Nelson of the Institute for Advanced Study each received an award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in the social and behavioral sciences that advance our understanding of pressing social issues.

Before the event, Anderson and Nelson sat down for a conversation with Sage CEO, Blaise Simqu. The three discussed equity, public trust in science, and strengthening the ties between social and behavioral science research and evidence-based policy.

In response to Blaise’s question about Anderson’s pathway into the social and behavioral sciences via philosophy, she said, “You have to engage in the full range of the social sciences to think more clearly about social and political issues. My whole career is about bringing philosophy and social sciences together. Breaking down silos.” Nelson added that she’s seen social and behavioral science silos broken down at the university level but there’s still a need for “working together across fields and across sectors to affect change.”
