Editors in Action: Lightning Talks on Improving DEI in Academic Journals

In this webinar, Editors from Sage journals will share their experiences and initiatives in promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in academic publishing. Attendees will gain valuable insights into effective practices and the positive impacts of such actions in supporting scholars from historically marginalized groups. The discussion will cover efforts to broaden the diversity among reviewers, authors, and editors in the academic community. A Q&A session will follow, offering an opportunity for deeper engagement and understanding of these vital topics.

Caroline Porter

Associate Vice President for Research Publishing·Sage

Caroline Porter is Associate VP for Research Publishing at Sage, with 20 years’ experience in scholarly publishing. She leads on key strategic objectives around the management, development, and growth of Sage's journals program. She sits on the Sage Research Integrity Group and is a Trustee of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). She chairs Sage's global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Research taskforce, as well as COPE’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, Accessibility (DEIA) subcommittee.


Amina Abubakar

Aga Khan University, Nairobi, Kenya

Amina Abubakar Associate Editor of International Journal of Behavioral Development, and is a full Professor and Director for the Institute for Human Development, Aga Khan University (AKU). She is a Senior Research Scientist at the ​Kenya Medical Research Institute/Wellcome Trust Research Programme and Visiting Academic at the University of Oxford, Department of Psychiatry. 


Chloe Marshall

UCL Institute of Education, University College, London

Chloe Marshall is Editor of First Language, and Emerita Professor of Psychology, Language and Education at UCL's Institute of Education, UK. Her research focuses on children's language and cognitive development, and she used to co-lead the MA/MSc Educational Neuroscience taught jointly by the Institute of Education and Birkbeck. She was appointed Associate Editor of First Language in 2012 and Editor-in-Chief in 2017. She is also on the Editorial Boards of Autism and Developmental Language Impairments (a SAGE journal), npj Science of Learning, and Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education. 

Rosa Hoekstra

Kings College London, UK

Dr Rosa Hoekstra, an Editor of Autism, is a Reader in Global Perspectives on Neurodevelopmental Disabilities at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. After finishing her PhD at the VU University in Amsterdam, she continued her autism research through a postdoctoral fellowship at Cambridge University’s Autism Research Centre. Since 2009 she combines her research with teaching in Psychology, first at The Open University (2009-2015) and now at King's College London (2015-present). Her work is motivated by a drive to conduct high quality research that makes a difference to autistic people and their families worldwide. She co-leads the NIHR (UK) funded SPARK project, aiming to improve support for children with developmental disabilities and their families in Ethiopia and Kenya. 


Deborah Christie

University College London Hospitals, UK

Deborah Christie has been Editor of Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry since 2018. She has long championed diversity and inclusion, working to ensure equal opportunities and safe spaces for all. Rather than being something that sets people apart, she believes that our differences are something we can celebrate together and has spearheaded the recent Abbott Diabetes Anti-Stigma campaign ‘Let’s Change Perspectives’ writing and presenting on a number of media outlets about the campaign. She is currently editing a special issue on DEI for the journal. She is a Professor of Paediatric and Adolescent Psychology, a transformational life coach and Consultant at University College London Hospitals and Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trusts.
