SAGE Launches Social Science for Social Justice Series Spotlighting Emerging Voices of Color
Virtual launch event to take place on December 13th
SAGE, an independent academic publisher with an eye toward social justice, is launching the Social Science for Social Justice book series to provide a platform for emerging academics, journalists, and activists of color to address vital societal issues. International and interdisciplinary in scope, the series offers rigorous analysis in jargon-free language, allowing critical insights from the social sciences to reach audiences outside of academia.
The series is edited by Meredith D. Clark of Northeastern University and Jason Arday of the University of Glasgow and launches with two titles:
Consuming Crisis: Commodifying Care and COVID-19 by Francesca Sobande – a crucial account of how consumer culture capitalized on the COVID-19 pandemic
The Muslim, State and Mind: Psychology in Times of Islamophobia by Tarek Younis – unpacks where the politics of psychology and psychiatry and the politics of Muslims overlap
More titles in the series are forthcoming in 2023 and will cover topics such as racial trauma, gender, and African feminisms.
Reflecting Sage’s mission-driven approach to publishing, the series disrupts academic frameworks that exclude people of color, challenging the idea of who is considered an “expert” by bringing in authors from fields including social activism and journalism as well as academia, and centering uncensored voices of color.
“As an independent company, we are free to champion bold new voices that may not be part of the homogenous canon in academia – voices that are balanced, anti-racist, and challenge unfair power structures in society,” said Kiren Shoman, Senior Vice President of Editorial, Global Learning and UK Teaching at SAGE. “The authors in this series will use accessible language to share radical ideas to help transform how we understand and work to address contemporary social justice issues.”
A free virtual launch event will take place on Tuesday, December 13 at 4:30pm GMT. The series’ authors and editors will discuss routes to diversifying knowledge production in an academic environment that often excludes and diminishes voices of color. Registration for the event is now open.
