Sage reports on progress in new Independence with Impact Report

The latest Independence with Impact report, which covers the calendar year 2023, highlights our efforts and progress to make a positive impact on society as a business, employer, and publisher.

Highlights include:

  • We donated 35,688 books to 164 partners in 22 countries through Book Aid International.

  • We increased the representation of women in leadership positions from 61% in 2022 to 66% in 2023.

  • We increased the representation of women on our board of directors from 42% in 2022 to 50% in 2023 and of people of color from 33% in 2022 to 43% in 2023.

  • We achieved a 50% reduction in global emissions across our operations (against our 2019 baseline).

  • We exceeded our short-term net zero goal, to reduce operational carbon emissions by 45% by 2030.

  • We introduced Sage Policy Profiles, a free, browser-based tool powered by Overton’s vast index of 11 million+ policy documents, that enables researchers to easily find, visualize, and share their work’s citations in policy, giving them a view of their impact beyond academic citations.

  • Exploring new and different ways to support student success, we expanded our portfolio of business education resources, acquiring titles from textbook publisher Chicago Business Press and Hubro Education a developer of business simulations. We also acquired Epigeum, a leading provider of online courses for universities and increased our research portfolio by acquiring IOS Press.

“As an independent publisher, we measure success not by the health of our share price but by how we fulfill our mission of building bridges to knowledge. As we approach our 60th anniversary, our independence assured, the spirit of championing new ideas and technologies is integral to how we operate,” says Blaise Simqu, chief executive officer at Sage. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to our achievements throughout 2023, our authors, editors, contributors, societies, librarians, and our global staff who are dedicated to enhancing Sage’s impact.”

###

Sage is a global academic publisher of books, journals, and library resources with a growing range of technologies to enable discovery, access, and engagement. Believing that research and education are critical in shaping society, 24-year-old Sara Miller McCune founded Sage in 1965. Today, we are controlled by a group of trustees charged with maintaining our independence and mission indefinitely.

Our guaranteed independence means we’re free to:

  • Do more — supporting an equitable academic future, furthering disciplines that drive social change, and helping social and behavioral science make an impact.

  • Work together — building lasting relationships, championing diverse perspectives, and co-creating resources to transform teaching and learning.

  • Think long-term — experimenting, taking risks, and investing in new ideas.
