Sage’s first-ever Independence with Impact Report demonstrates commitment to advancing academic and social equity
The report, which covers the calendar year 2022, outlines key areas where Sage is working to advance equity, sustainability, and freedom of expression in our day-to-day work and beyond.
Highlights include:
Governance: 2022 marked the first full year since our founder, Sara Miller McCune, transferred her voting rights to an independent trust, making it impossible to sell Sage now or in the future.
Our people and culture: Colleagues at Sage donated over $167,000 in 2022 to charitable causes, all of which were matched by the business. More than 100 employees volunteered over 900 hours to support projects in their local area.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): We established the Office of DEI, whose mission is to build global practices to cultivate a diverse workforce, provide a more inclusive and equitable workplace, and enhance our wider impact. We also continued to expand guidance for editors, authors, and instructors to foster more equitable teaching, learning, and researching workflows.
Enabling impact: We signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and expanded the time frame for measuring citations to up to a decade after publication to better measure this impact. We also sponsored the British Academy’s Researchers at Risk program to cover salary, research expenses, and living costs for researchers exposed to immediate threat by conflicts such as the war in Ukraine.
Sustainability: We reduced our global carbon emissions by more than half compared with 2019 and announced our commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2040. The report also highlights employee-led work to improve sustainability, both within Sage and our supply chain.
"This report is more than just a summary of our achievements, it is a reflection of our people turning our values into action,” says Blaise Simqu, chief executive officer at Sage. “I am proud of what we accomplished in 2022, and we remain fully committed to making a meaningful, long-lasting difference in society.”

Sage is a global academic publisher of books, journals, and library resources with a growing range of technologies to enable discovery, access, and engagement. Believing that research and education are critical in shaping society, 24-year-old Sara Miller McCune founded Sage in 1965. Today, we are controlled by a group of trustees charged with maintaining our independence and mission indefinitely.
Our guaranteed independence means we’re free to:
Do more — supporting an equitable academic future, furthering disciplines that drive social change, and helping social and behavioral science make an impact.
Work together — building lasting relationships, championing diverse perspectives, and co-creating resources to transform teaching and learning.
Think long-term — experimenting, taking risks, and investing in new ideas.
