Sage partners with Ludenso to trial augmented reality textbook for nursing students

Sage is partnering with augmented reality (AR) authoring platform, Ludenso, to trial AR in the textbook “Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology for Nursing Practice”, by Neal Cook, Andrea Shepherd & Jennifer Boore. The trial, currently underway at the University of Ulster, uses the Ludenso app to let students explore interactive 3D models of human anatomy and physiology within the textbook to enhance their learning experience.

The AR-enriched textbook provides a visual tool to students in a demanding program, enabling them to learn independently while offering faculty a high-quality resource to support their teaching. The interactive 3D models, such as a beating heart, segments of the brain, and the optical nerve, create an opportunity to increase engagement and aid students in a complex aspect of the degree.

“We’re excited to partner with Ludenso to bring this textbook to life and to support learners and educators in new and engaging ways,” said Katie Metzler, Vice President of Books and Social Science Innovation at Sage. “We believe that AR technology has the potential to transform education by providing students with a dynamic, hands-on learning experience which will help them gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter and improve their overall academic performance.”

"We’re incredibly proud to be partnering with one of the world’s leading academic publishers,” said Eirik G. Wahlstrøm, co-founder and CEO of Ludenso. “The team at Sage is truly passionate about empowering their students, and it’s a privilege to be working alongside a team that is so dedicated to revitalizing the academic textbook with immersive visual technology. We’re excited to collaborate and create more engaging learning experiences by bringing Sage’s fantastic curriculum to life with AR."

The trial has received positive feedback from participants and Sage is inviting more institutions to test this AR textbook in their classrooms. For information about participating in the trial, please contact david.lin@sagepub.co.uk.

About Ludenso

Ludenso has built the world’s first augmented reality authoring tool specifically for publishers. Founded in Oslo in 2018, partnerships have already been formed with some of the largest publishers in Europe, including Sage, Cambridge University Press and Infinitas Learning. Ludenso recently closed seed investment from Johan Brand and Jamie Brooker - the co-founders of EdTech unicorn, Kahoot!

Ludenso has conducted three significant studies with leading pedagogical researchers and digital didactics in Norway. Early results suggest that AR technology has an especially high impact on students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia and ADHD.

Via the Ludenso Studio, publishers can easily and quickly enrich either existing or new textbook titles with 3D models, embedded videos, audio clips, or links. The implementation of AR leads to higher levels of engagement amongst learners, along with the ability to secure significantly more adoptions than competitors. The platform is designed to allow editors and authors to enrich titles without any technical expertise, which in turn improves the lifespan of titles and provides a seamless link for students between the print textbook and the publisher’s existing digital resources.
