A Juneteenth Message from Our DEI Advocacy Lead, Malcolm Trotter

Juneteenth—shorthand for June 19th—celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. Originating in 1865, Juneteenth commemorates the arrival of federal troops in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom. It is an official federal holiday and a time of joy, celebration, and reflection across the country.

Celebrating the Americans with Disabilities Act

Today marks the 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark civil rights legislation that works to ensure that all people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Pride Month

Pride Month is a time to acknowledge and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. Throughout the month of June, we’ll be highlighting resources and events to raise awareness and honor Pride.

We have recently signed on to the Human Rights Commission Statement on Anti-LGBTQ State Legislation to take a stand against anti-LGBTQ legislation in the US and offer our support to transgender youth. We are also continuing our partnership with the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom on Unite Against Book Bans. At the end of month (June 27th at 9AM PT/5PM BST), we are hosting a virtual panel, Expressions of LGBTQIA+ Joy, with panelists Jacob Bloomfield, Rosie Nelson, Julian Kevon Glover, and Jonathan F. Alexander.

Pride does not end in June. SAGE’s commitment to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and to learn—and share—is ongoing and an important part of our overall DEI commitment.

To acknowledge the day’s aim and purpose, we have curated a list of resources as a starting point to provide an opportunity to act and engage in dialogue with the media, policymakers, public opinion, and wider civil society

What are we doing to make journals publishing more inclusive?

Last year, the SAGE Journals team released a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) pledge using a framework from the Royal Society of Chemistry’s joint commitment for action on inclusion and diversity. The pledge aims to ensure that SAGE’s identity, values, and animating principles such as our guaranteed independence and our mission of building bridges to knowledge, are incorporated into our DEI work. In this blog post, Martha Avtandilian, Publisher for SAGE's Social Science Journals division and lead of the Research Pillar's Application Stream, and Jessica Lipowski, Publishing Editor on the STM Journals Editorial team, reflect on our DEI pledge for SAGE Journals a year in and looks ahead to new goals to create more inclusive journals publishing at SAGE.

Celebrating Women's History Month and International Women's Day
